Run point-to-point between Pietermaritzburg and Durban in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal, the Comrades alternates direction each year: the 'down run' descends roughly 90 km toward the coast, while the 'up run' climbs inland over about 87 km. The course is defined by its 'Big Five' hills - Cowies, Fields, Botha's, Inchanga and Polly Shortts - and reaches its high point near Umlaas Road at about 870 m. It is one of the world's oldest and largest ultramarathons, run almost entirely on public roads lined with spectators.
