The UTMB starts and finishes in Chamonix, France, sending runners on a full loop around the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy and Switzerland along the route of the Tour du Mont Blanc. Covering roughly 170 km with around 10,000 m of climbing, it passes Les Contamines, Courmayeur and Champex and tops out at the Grand Col Ferret near 2,500 m. The relentless succession of high alpine cols, much of it run through the night, makes it one of the sport's premier mountain ultras.
Typical race-day conditions: Late-August alpine weather is variable, with warm valley days giving way to cold, potentially wet or windy nights at altitude.
